Freedom Through Self Control

Let’s talk about self-control and its essential place in our recovery journeys. The Scripture I’m reflecting on is 2 Peter 1:2-9, where Peter encourages us to pursue qualities like goodness, knowledge, perseverance, and godliness. Right in the middle of these virtues, he emphasizes self-control.

Self-control is not about restriction, but about freedom. It's the ability to choose what’s right, even when our impulses pull us in the wrong direction. In recovery, we’re learning to say "no" to what once controlled us… be it substances, unhealthy habits, or toxic behaviors. Self-control allows us to step away from what harms us and embrace what heals us.

2 Peter 1:5-6 tells us to "make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control." Notice how self-control follows knowledge. It’s a reminder that the more we understand our past struggles and the impact of our choices, the stronger our self-control becomes. It’s through wisdom and learning that we’re empowered to choose a new path.

But the Scripture doesn’t stop there. Peter also says that when we grow in these qualities, we will be "effective and productive in our knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." For me, this speaks to the idea that self-control not only protects us from falling back but also prepares us to grow, to move forward, to become more effective in our lives, and to serve others in their journeys as well.

When we exercise self-control, we honor the process of transformation God has begun in us. We realize that it’s not about perfection, but about progress… taking small steps, day by day, trusting that God’s power is working in our weakness. When we stumble, we don’t stay down. Instead, we get back up, knowing that we are not alone in this fight.

Prayer Corner

Heavenly Father,

We come before You today with humble hearts, seeking Your strength and guidance as we learn the power of self-control. We thank You for the wisdom found in 2 Peter 1:2-9, reminding us that self-control is a vital part of our journey towards healing and freedom. Help us to see that self-control is not about restriction, but about embracing the freedom to choose what is good and true.

Lord, we acknowledge that there are times when our impulses pull us in directions that lead us away from You, from our true selves, and from the path of recovery. Grant us the courage to say "no" to those things that once enslaved us, whether they be substances, harmful behaviors, or thoughts that keep us bound. Help us to recognize the power in choosing what heals us instead of what harms us.

Father, as we grow in knowledge, let that knowledge lead to greater self-control. Let Your wisdom be the foundation upon which we build our choices, allowing us to resist temptation and walk in the new life You have given us. Teach us to trust the process of transformation You have begun in us, knowing that progress, not perfection, is the goal.

When we stumble, remind us that we are not alone. Your grace is sufficient, and Your power is made perfect in our weakness. May we rise again with renewed strength, holding onto the hope that You are with us every step of the way.

We thank You for Your faithfulness, and we trust that You are shaping us into more effective and productive vessels of Your love and grace. Help us to serve others from the place of transformation that You have brought us to, and may our lives reflect the beauty of Your work in us.

In Jesus’ name, we pray.

Amen.
