Surrendering the Past and Moving Forward
As we journey through life, we often carry the weight of our past… whether it’s mistakes, failures, or unfulfilled expectations. But there comes a time when we must choose to release that burden in order to move forward into the future God has planned for us.
Surrendering the past doesn’t mean we forget what we’ve experienced, but rather, we release its hold over us.
The Apostle Paul encourages us with this mindset in Philippians 3:13-14:
"No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." (Philippians 3:13-14,)
Paul’s words remind us that holding onto the past can slow us down, while looking ahead allows us to run with purpose. This kind of surrender is an act of faith and trusting that God’s plans are far greater than what we leave behind.
Jesus also invites us into this kind of surrender. In Matthew 11:28, He says:
"Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28,)
When we cling to past pain or regret, we carry burdens we were never meant to hold onto. Jesus promises to exchange our heaviness for rest, if we’re willing to trust Him with it. This rest is not a passive state, but a space where God renews our strength and reorients our focus towards the future He has in store.
As we surrender our past, let us be reminded of God’s promise in Isaiah 43:18-19:
"But forget all that— it is nothing compared to what I am going to do. For I am about to do something new. See, I have already begun! Do you not see it?" (Isaiah 43:18-19,)
God is always working on new things in our lives, but we must let go of the past to make room for the new. The past, no matter how difficult, is no match for the transformative power of God's grace and the bright future He has for each of us.
So, as we step forward, may we surrender what no longer serves us, trusting that God is leading us into something greater than we could ever imagine. In faith, we press on… embracing the freedom that comes with letting go and leaning into His promises.
