How to Deepen Your Christian Walk
“Let your roots grow down into Him, and let your lives be built on Him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.” - Colossians 2:7

Sometimes in our walk with Christ, we find ourselves in a rut. We know the right things to say. We might attend meetings, read devotionals, and pray here and there, but something still feels surface-level. We long for more. More of God’s presence. More clarity. More peace. More purpose.

The good news? That desire in your heart is a response to God already calling you deeper. He’s not distant or disinterested… He’s drawing you into deeper waters, into a relationship that changes everything from the inside out.

So, how do we actually deepen our walk with Christ?

1. Make Time for God Every Day

This sounds basic but it’s often the first thing we neglect. Life gets loud, and the Spirit speaks softly. Set a time each day, even if it’s just 15 minutes, to meet with God. Mornings are powerful, but find whatever time works for your rhythm.

Whether it’s journaling your prayers, reading Scripture, sitting in silence, or worshipping with music… just show up.

“Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” - James 4:8

2. Get Rooted in the Word

The Bible isn’t just a history book, it’s a living guide. Don’t just read it to check a box. Read it to connect with the Author. Let it convict, comfort, and challenge you. Pick one passage and ask:

  • What is God showing me here?

  • How does this apply to my life today?

  • What needs to change in my thinking?

Start with the Gospels, Psalms, or Proverbs if you’re not sure where to begin.

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” - Psalm 119:105

3. Don’t Walk Alone, Plug Into Community

Spiritual depth doesn’t happen in isolation. God uses people to sharpen us, encourage us, and hold us up when we stumble. Whether it's a faith-based trauma recovery group, Bible study, or a local church… get connected.

Even Jesus did life with 12 others.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” - Proverbs 27:17

4. Practice Spiritual Disciplines

Sometimes we wait for the feeling of connection before we act. But often, connection comes through discipline first. Fasting, serving, journaling, worship, and even stillness are ways we make space for God to speak.

Discipline doesn’t equal legalism. It’s an act of love.

“Train yourself to be godly.” - 1 Timothy 4:7

5. Put Your Faith Into Action

The deepest walks aren’t the loudest, they’re the most obedient. It’s one thing to know what Jesus said. It’s another thing to live it.

  • Love when it’s hard.

  • Forgive when it hurts.

  • Serve when it’s inconvenient.

  • Speak truth in love.

Let your actions reflect His heart.

“Faith without works is dead.” - James 2:17

Final Thoughts: Go Deep, Not Just Wide

Spiritual depth isn’t about having the right language or a long track record. It’s about surrendering more of yourself to God each day. It’s a walk, not a sprint. There will be dry seasons, doubts, and delays, but God never stops drawing you deeper.

So today, take one step. Just one. Set aside time. Open your Bible. Reach out to a brother or sister. Choose silence over distraction. Offer forgiveness where bitterness has lingered. And trust this truth:

The God who called you is faithful to finish what He started in you.

We’re walking this out together… one day, one decision at a time.

Keep pressing forward. Keep praying. Keep trusting.

In His Grace,
Jeff

Prayer Corner

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for calling us into a deeper relationship with You. We confess that we often get distracted, discouraged, or complacent in our faith. But today, we pause to say… we want more of You. More of Your presence, more of Your wisdom, more of Your peace.

Root us in Your Word. Stir in us a fresh hunger for truth. Teach us to make time for You, not out of obligation, but out of love. Help us build rhythms that draw us closer day by day.

Surround us with people who will sharpen us and speak life into us. Show us how to walk in obedience, even when it’s hard, even when it costs us. Let our lives reflect Your heart, not just our habits.

Grow our faith, God, not just in knowledge, but in intimacy. Make our hearts soft, our spirits bold, and our lives fruitful for Your Kingdom.

We surrender the shallow places and invite You to take us deeper.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

"As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another."

Proverbs 27:17
