Buried Pain: The Pathway to Freedom

In this journey of recovery, I’ve realized something… pain that is buried doesn’t disappear, it only festers. I used to think that if I could just suppress the hurt, distract myself, or cover it up with busyness, I’d be okay. But the reality is that buried pain has a way of coming to the surface, whether we’re ready or not. It manifests in our actions, our relationships, and our mental well-being.

The good news is that we don’t have to face this pain alone. We have a Savior who invites us to bring our pain to Him, trusting that He can turn even our deepest wounds into sources of healing and strength.

Paul, in Philippians 4:10-14, shares about learning to be content in all circumstances. Whether he had plenty or was in need, he found peace through Christ’s strength:

“How I praise the Lord that you are concerned about me again. I know you have always been concerned for me, but you didn’t have the chance to help me. Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:10-14 NLT)

Paul reminds us that regardless of what we face, whether it’s external hardships or the internal struggles of buried pain, there is strength in Christ to endure and overcome. His words encourage us to bring our struggles, even the buried pain we’ve kept hidden for so long, into the light of Christ’s love.

Recovery isn’t about perfection or having it all figured out, it’s about learning to lean into Christ’s strength, especially when we feel like we can’t do it on our own. Whether we’re at our highest point or feeling like we’re scraping the bottom, Christ meets us in the middle of our pain and gives us the strength to face it, heal from it, and grow through it.

When I finally faced my own buried pain, I discovered that God’s grace was more than enough. He didn’t just help me survive; He helped me find a new kind of contentment, even amidst the struggle. If you’re carrying buried pain today, I encourage you to take that first step, bring it to the surface, offer it to God, and allow His strength to carry you through.
